Rooftop solar adoption in Rajasthan is set for a major push as the state government considers an additional subsidy over and above the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. If approved in the upcoming state Budget on February 19, this move could make rooftop solar more affordable for households.
Currently, the central government provides ₹60,000 for a 2kW solar plant, which costs around ₹1.3 lakh. The state government is expected to announce an additional ₹20,000 subsidy, raising the total financial support to ₹80,000—covering almost 80% of the cost.
Despite Rajasthan being a leader in large-scale solar projects, household rooftop adoption has remained low. Experts blame this on the free electricity scheme, which discourages people from investing in solar. "The only way to drive rooftop adoption is to make it nearly free with subsidies of around 80%," said Ajay Yadav, President of the Renewable Energy Association of Rajasthan (REAR).
With a target of 5 lakh households by next year but only 26,000 projects installed so far, the state’s renewed focus on green energy in the 2025-26 Budget could finally drive mass adoption. Not only will this shift reduce dependence on free power schemes, but it will also help Rajasthan lead in residential solar adoption, just as it does in industrial solar.
If announced, households across Rajasthan will benefit significantly, making solar energy an easy and cost-effective choice.
